This and the following drawing, although dated 1938 on completion probably about the turn of the year, have been retained in c. 1939. Moore can be seen moving away from the abstract sketches which characterised the mid-1930s and towards the more humanised qualities of his work in the early 1940s. There is a particularly tender sketch of a mother and child second from right in the centre row.
