More Information
In Relief No. 1, Moore’s projection of shapes helps gives the sculpture its own presence in the here and now. The figure leans slightly, its right leg further forward as if taking a step towards the viewer. Relief No.1 was made at the end of the 1950s, a decade when Moore created two major relief sculptures for public spaces. The first relief sculpture Moore made was Time/Life Screen 1952-53 (LH 344) for the Time/Life Building, London. The second, a 19-metre-long brick work, Wall Relief 1955 (LH 375), made for the Bouwcentrum in Rotterdam, comprised a row of abstracted organic forms, seeming to swell from the building’s face. Relief No. 1’s features appear to originate from one of the ten maquettes made for this project, with the works sharing an energy of growth and surging natural power.
