2022 Aalborg, Kunsten Museum of Modern Art, A World of Marble
04 March 2022 - 21 August 2022
A World of Marble will examine how marble as a tradition-bound material is understood and interpreted through modern and contemporary art. The exhibition forms part of the celebration of the 50-year anniversary of the Kunsten Museum of Modern Art’s iconic marble building designed by world-famous Finnish architect Alvar Aalto.
More InformationWith Alvar Aalto’s iconic white marble building as the framework, Kunsten Museum of
Modern Art presents A World of Marble, which explores what it
means when an artwork is made of marble. Why do artists work with marble, what
is the significance of the material for the experience of the work, and how has the use of
marble in art changed over time? Marble has been used in art since antiquity and has, more
than any other material, helped to define classical art and our understanding of the
emergence of western culture. Marble has traditionally communicated status, history,
power and classical ideals of beauty and several of art history’s most iconic works were
created from marble; from sculptures like Laocoön and The Venus de Milo to architectural
masterpieces like the Parthenon and the Taj Mahal.
Over the past decade, marble has also become a favoured material in interior design, while for others, it is associated with 1980s kitsch. Despite - or because of - its inherent content and its distinctly sensuous qualities, marble has again become a favoured material for many contemporary artists in recent decades. A return that seems to coincide with a greater general focus on nature and our material world in a digital age. Through a wide range of artworks, the exhibition A World of Marble examines how marble as a tradition-bound material is understood and interpreted through contemporary art and the significance that marble as a material has on our understanding of art.

Exhibition Info: The Sainsbury Centre presents a major new exhibition exploring the enduring appeal of ancient Egypt in art and design from the ancient past to the present day.
Over 150 works drawn from collections in the UK and internationally will examine how ancient Egypt has shaped our cultural imagination. From antiquity, when the Great Pyramid was revered as a wonder of the ancient world, to the Cleopatra of Shakespeare’s stage, this ground-breaking exhibition explores this ongoing engagement with ancient Egypt and charts its many forms across centuries of art and design. The exhibition examines how the iconic motifs and visual styles of Egypt have been re-imagined and re-invented over time – revealing a history closely entwined with conquest and colonial politics.

28 March 2024 - 03 November 2024
Exhibition Info: In 2024, a selection of over twenty of Moore’s bronzes will be displayed in the landscape adjacent to the studios where he developed his ideas. Natural and human forms can be seen to have inspired sculptures across all of Moore’s most iconic themes: the mother and child, the reclining figure, and the juxtaposition of internal / external forms. A number of Moore’s multi-part reclining figures, where he asks the viewer to imaginatively piece together the body, are joined by some of his purest organic abstractions in which we can trace the journey from handheld pebble to monumental work.
11 June 2022 - 25 September 2022
Exhibition Info: Lucy Carrington Wertheim (1883-1971) supported many public galleries and young artists, and bequeathed over 50 works to Towner Art Gallery. This exhibition will bring together paintings, drawings and sculptures from her disbanded collection for the first time in 50 years alongside works exhibited in the Wertheim Gallery, which she established in 1930. The exhibition includes Moore’s Head of a Girl which was shown at the Wertheim Gallery’s opening exhibition.
27 May 2022 - 04 September 2022
Exhibition Info: This exhibition takes as its starting point the artist’s early fascination with the Neolithic site of Stonehenge and continued exploration of the upright abstract form. Moore first encountered the prehistoric monument under the moonlight as a young man in 1921. He was inspired by the grandeur of the idea – a powerful and primal work of art set in the landscape.
